We go back to 2007, to the first CrossFit Games in history, and it makes our hair stand on end to see that only 16 years ago the “fitness elite” were competing at Dave Castro’s Ranch doing kipping pull-ups and not wearing CrossFit shoes, but running, aerobic or street shoes: “training” was not a sport or a discipline and, therefore, there was no specific footwear for it.
The first Crossfit Licensed shoes
It all starts in 2010, when CrossFit and Reebok announced a 10-year partnership under which Reebok would be the official licensed CrossFit footwear and apparel provider until 2020.
Needless to say, this sponsorship was incredibly beneficial to our sport: we only need to take a look at some video footage from that time to see just how important the role Reebok played was in establishing CrossFit as a brand and as a sport.
2011: Reebok CrossFit Nano 1.0
In November 2011 Reebok put the first 1000 pairs of the Nano 1.0 on sale on its website: suddenly, a big brand had created a specific shoe for a sport that at the time was only practiced by a few, and this somehow legitimized it.
The Reebok CrossFit Nano 1.0 quickly became the official uniform of crossfitters. Its three main innovations were: the flat and stable sole, the wide toe box with more room for the toes, and the abrasion resistance of the lacing.
These three features still remain today in one form or another but, like the first Crossfit Games in 2007, they were just the starting signal for 12 years of constant evolution.
2022: Reebok Nano X2
The new Reebok Nano X2 is presented as the thinnest, most comfortable and fastest version of Nano. With a focus on comfort, these are the main new features you’ll notice when training with the Nano X2:
- New upper fabric: flexible and breathable but double reinforced.
- Thinner heel clip: same stability, less weight.
- Softer and more ergonomic inner heel: the heel cushioning has been reduced in height and thickness to lighten the design.
